During your degree you will visit a range of relevant sites, reserves and other locations as well as receive talks and sessions conducted and led by subject specialists. Destinations may include the North York Moors National Park, YWT Spurn National Nature Reserve and the RSPB’s Bempton Cliffs reserve.

Some visits will be free, but others may incur a charge varying with the nature of the visit and the distance travelled. Such charges will be kept to a reasonable rate.

You will be required to undertake 76 hours of work placement activity at each level of your Foundation Degree.

Before you begin your course, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment. Many of our courses need specialist health and safety clothing, but we’ve made it simple - some of your essentials and college branded clothing can be bought from our online shop.

For your course, you will need:

  • Warm, waterproof clothing
  • Wellington boots and walking boots
  • Binoculars and hand lens
  • Stationery including notepad for use in class, pens and pencils
  • Folder with dividers to organise your work and assignments
  • Access to cloud storage (a One Drive account and Office 365 are available through the college)
  • Rucksack for trips and visits.
  • You may need additional items such as steel toe-capped boots for your work placement.

Other useful (but not essential) equipment:

  • Camera
  • Weatherwriter
  • Laptop
  • SPSS statistical software available from the online shop
  • On successful completion of the programme, students have the opportunity to graduate at a ceremony wearing formal dress. The hire of the formal dress is an additional cost.
